Larry Marsalli, the former mayor of Santa Clara and a lifelong resident of the city, died Monday. He was 92.

“My father was not only devoted to the city of Santa Clara, he was also devoted to his wife and children,” his daughter, Denise Bachur, wrote in an email Friday afternoon. “We really were blessed with a wonderful, kind, and very loving father. Our family couldn’t have asked for a better role model of how to live your life and serve your community.”

Born Lawrence Joseph Marsalli on June 4, 1926, but known locally as “Mr. Santa Clara,” the founding member of the Mission City Community Fund sat on the City Council for more than a decade, including a stint as mayor in 1967-68.

A graduate of Santa Clara High School, Marsalli served as an Army staff sergeant in Word War II.

Back in Santa Clara, Marsalli volunteered for numerous organizations, spending 50 years as the assistant fire chief for the Santa Clara Volunteer Fire Department. Likewise, Marsalli devoted a half century to serving as chairman of the city’s annual Parade of Champions.

In 2007, Marsalli launched the Marsalli Family Foundation, sponsoring an annual Thanksgiving dinner at St. Clare Hall.

The cause of death was not immediately clear.

Marsalli is survived by his wife of 69 years, Elise, two daughters and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his son, Jerry, who died in 2017 after a long battle with cancer.

A visitation and rosary service will take place Thursday evening at St. Clare Church with a funeral mass to follow Friday.

His family requests that those wishing to honor Marsalli donate to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Santa Clara Kaiser Hospice.
