Gwendolyn (Gwen) Matthews, resident of Fairfield and Green Valley for many years, passed away Nov. 18, 2011, in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
Gwen was born and raised in Tacoma, Wash. She married the late Richard Matthews (Ret. Col. USAF) before the outbreak of World War II. Gwen endured the difficult wait while Lt. Matthews was held in a German Prisoner of War camp for almost two years after being shot down on an air mission. She remained an Air Force wife until Col. Matthews retired at Travis Air Force Base.
Gwen was pre-deceased by her parents, John and Elsie Bielanin; her brother, John Bielanin; and her husband of 38 years, Richard. She is survived by her daughter, Marti Gulizia; and granddaughters, Tawnie and Haley Gulizia of Idaho Falls; son, Marshall Matthews; granddaughter, Caitlin Miller; great-granddaughter, Ella Miller; and grandson, Eric Matthews, all of Wichita, Kan.; and her dear friends, Brad and Cathy Rich of Green Valley.
A memorial service for Gwen will take place in the late spring.
