LONG BEACH >> Senior guard Jailah Donald scored 31 points as the Serra girls basketball team held off St. Anthony 56-48 in a Del Rey League opener for both teams Thursday night.

“Every time we come to St. Anthony, it’s always a challenge,” Donald said. “It’s just the mindset coming into the game, moving the ball, helping my team out, doing what I can do to be a leader.”

The 5-foot-8 Donald was clutch when the game mattered most.

She scored 19 points in the second half, which was punctuated by calmly sinking several free throws to seal the victory.

In one way or another, pandemic postponements have affected every single team.

“It’s been really tough not having (games) to play but I’ve been in the gym all the time so just keep working until it’s time to play,” Donald concluded.

Serra (9-6, 1-0) led 29-20 at halftime but the Saints kept up the pressure in the second half, especially in the fourth quarter, when they made it a two-possession game with less than 24 seconds left in the game.

St. Anthony was led by sophomore guard Ryann Bennett, who scored 18 points, and senior guard Bridgette McIntyre, who scored 15 points.

St. Anthony is now 11-6 overall, 0-1 in league.

The Saints’ next game will be at Bishop Montgomery on Sunday, Jan. 16, which is a replacement date for a game that was previously postponed due to COVID protocols.

Donald has signed a national letter of intent to play college basketball at St. John’s University in New York.

“It was how I felt that we connected,” Donald said. “I went to my visit and I felt like they really wanted the best for me and I feel like no other coach was going to get that for me. They really showed very good interest in me.”

She also explained what made her feel comfortable with the idea of moving across the country to Queens, New York.

“The coaching staff made me feel safe and at home,” Donald explained. “I have a good support system at home family-wise and they trust me to go outside and get out my comfort zone.”
