View Original Notice ? Kevin Weatherly returns to KROQ as senior vice president of programming
Entertainment company Audacy announced Thursday, May 12 that former KROQ (106.7 FM) program director Kevin Weatherly will return to the station as senior vice president of programming in Los Angeles starting June 6.
Weatherly left the station two years ago, which was then owned by Entercom, to work as the head of North American programming at Spotify. He was originally hired at KROQ in 1992 and for nearly three decades helped the station become globally recognized for breaking new artists, world debuting the new music of major rock acts and curating popular radio festivals such as Weenie Roast and Almost Acoustic Christmas.
“KROQ is one of the most recognizable and iconic brands in all of radio,” Weatherly said of his return in a press release. “I’ve had the privilege of spending the majority of my career programming KROQ and I’m energized and ready for the next chapter. We have a lot of work ahead of us to return KROQ to its rightful position in the hearts and minds of longtime listeners and partners, and I can’t wait to get started.”
Weatherly was replaced by Mike Kaplan in 2020. Kaplan stepped down as program director last March.
Following Weatherly’s departure, the station experienced numerous shakeups. Most of the crew of the “Kevin in the Morning with Allie & Jensen” morning show, including the station’s award-winning on-air personality Kevin Ryder who co-hosted the successful “Kevin & Bean Show” for three decades, were abruptly fired. Ryder later joined former KROQ personality Doug “Sluggo” Roberts in the afternoons at KLOS (95.5 FM).
KROQ’s afternoon DJs Ted Stryker and Kevin Klein were then tapped to replace the morning show crew with the “Stryker & Klein” show. However, Stryker left KROQ last year and landed a gig hosting afternoons on ALT (98.7 FM) alongside Chris Booker in February.
In his new role, Weatherly will oversee KROQ’s content strategy, talent, operations and branding. He’ll also serve as format vice president for Audacy’s portfolio of alternative stations across the country and collaborate with artists, labels and management partners for various music initiatives and concert events.
