Miss Ellen Howell

Ellen Howell was born In South Korea on August 9, 1968. She was adopted by Linda and Robert Barnhart of Washington state in 1978, and attended grade school and high school in Seattle and Edmonds Washington. After graduating from the University of Washington in 1991 with a degree in Social Work, Ellen served in the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone and in Thailand. She taught ESL in South Korea for over two years, and returned to the United States to teach ESL in Cary, North Carolina. She moved to California to work with the Immigration and Naturalization Service, but subsequently entered the MA program in English Composition at California State University, San Bernardino. As a graduate student, Ellen was a writing consultant in the University Writing Center until she earned her degree in 2006. She became a full-time adjunct professor in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and assisted in planning and implementing the college’s Writing Center. She also helped students enrolled in the Social Work Program develop their writing skills. Teaching writing was Ellen’s passion, and she could be found on campus helping students almost every day. In addition to her mother and father, Ellen is survived by a brother, Sam Barnhart and his wife Tippy, aunt Barbara Barnhart, uncle Frank and aunt Susanne Howell, cousin Heather Howell and niece Alslyn Ramirez, as well as myriad students and friends around the world. In 2010, a stray cat allowed Ellen to act as a midwife when the feline gave birth, providing Ellen with her special three-cat family.
