LOS ANGELES — The Kings spent 80 of 82 regular-season games walking along the razor’s edge, constantly competing in one-goal matches in the process. So it seems fitting that they are headed for a do-or-die situation on Saturday in Game 7 of their first-round playoff series.

Their hosts will be the Edmonton Oilers, who forced a winner-take-all game with a 4-2 victory on Thursday night at Crypto.com Arena.

Three of the four Game 6s played in the NHL on Thursday sent their combatants to a Game 7, with only St. Louis successfully finishing off Minnesota. On Saturday, Boston-Carolina and Tampa Bay-Toronto will precede the Kings-Edmonton finale, which begins at 7 p.m. PT.

If the Kings win Saturday, they’ll face the victor of the Dallas-Calgary series, which Darryl Sutter’s Flames lead 3-2 going into Friday’s Game 6.

“Somebody a few years ago said that usually the fourth game is the toughest one to win. I’m pretty sure you guys know who it is,” Kings captain Anze Kopitar said, alluding to Sutter. “Obviously there’s something to it. We would have liked to have closed it out, but it didn’t happen, and we’ve got to move on and look ahead to Saturday.”

Defenseman Sean Durzi and winger Carl Grundstrom scored goals for the Kings, who erased a two-goal deficit and were looking to wrap up their first series since defeating the New York Rangers in the 2014 Stanley Cup Final. Jonathan Quick made 33 saves in defeat.

Winger Evander Kane had two goals, including an empty-netter, and an assist to pace the Oilers. Center Connor McDavid notched a goal and two assists; in the playoffs, as in the regular season, he leads the NHL in points. Cody Ceci had two assists and another defenseman, Tyson Barrie, netted the game-winning goal. Mike Smith stopped 30 shots.

Kane, who was signed midseason after having his contract terminated by the San Jose Sharks, sealed the Kings’ fate with a minute remaining by scoring an empty-net goal. The Kings had failed to convert on a power play and then received a reprieve when winger Josh Archibald missed a clean look at the vacated cage, only to cede a second goal to Kane.

With seven goals, Kane moved into a three-way tie for the postseason lead with Minnesota winger Kirill Kaprizov, whose team was eliminated Thursday, and Pittsburgh winger Jake Guentzel. Kane flashed seven fingers to the crowd after his goal.

“It means Game 7, baby,” said Kane, who added that his prediction for Game 7 was that it was “gonna be juicy.”

Earlier, with traffic in front and Edmonton defenseman Evan Bouchard advancing into the low slot, center Phillip Danault came up with a diving, sweeping stick check to break up the play halfway through the final frame, preserving a tie temporarily.

The relief Danault provided proved fleeting, as with 5:10 to play the Kings found themselves down by a goal. Edmonton’s marquee players McDavid and Leon Draisaitl hit the offensive zone with speed. But it was a lower-profile Oiler, Barrie, who trailed the play, received a saucer pass from Draisaitl, sized up a shot and picked his spot for the game-winner.

First, winger Andreas Athanasiou tried to carry the puck into three defenders with no support. That ignited the Edmonton counterattack, during which four Kings defenders dropped back below the faceoff circles, leaving Barrie uncovered.

“A huge error on our behalf on the winning goal. It’s preventable, it’s avoidable and we made it,” McLellan said. “When you’ve got those offensive weapons that they have, you’ve got to minimize (mistakes).”

Edmonton was without its highest-paid and most frequently deployed defenseman, Darnell Nurse, who was suspended one game for his headbutt on Danault in Game 5.

“(Nurse) is a huge staple back there for us,” Kane said. “The guys did a great job, obviously (Barrie) jumping up on the rush and scoring a huge goal for our group was the cherry on top.”

The trend of early-period goals persisted in the third, but this time it was the Kings striking with an equalizer just 29 seconds after the intermission. Mikey Anderson’s D-to-D dish for Matt Roy set up a pass down low for Grundstrom, who popped a short-side shot past Smith to knot the score. Grundstrom has four points in three games since missing Game 3 with an injury.

With around seven minutes left in the second period, the Kings produced a Herculean even-strength shift that drew a penalty on center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. On the resulting power play, Durzi set up at the top of the umbrella and connected on a blast from the blue line that halved the Kings’ deficit.

“We were down two-nothing, it didn’t faze us too much,” Kopitar said. “We knew we had to get one on the power play at some point, so that was big, and then obviously tying it up pretty early in the third. We just couldn’t push it over the line.”

The second period had started just like the first, with an Edmonton goal less than two minutes into it.

After defenseman Troy Stecher and Quick combined to shut down a two-on-one rush, the Oilers stayed in the offensive zone and regrouped. Defenseman Brett Kulak’s shot was redirected past Quick by Kane, who nearly scored again shortly thereafter, but his goal was waved off for goalie interference.

Eight minutes into the first period, Quick stood on his head during one sequence and a moment later found himself making a save as he was being run over by winger Kailer Yamamoto. Quick not only neutralized multiple threats from the Oilers, but he drew a penalty that sent the Kings to a fruitless power play.

Just 1:40 into the game, McDavid drove deftly through traffic and pushed a wraparound goal between Quick’s legs to give the Oilers Game 6’s first lead.

“Maybe the thought of ending the series kind of creeped into our minds and we started off a little tentative,” Kopitar said. “Credit to them, they obviously had a good start.”

“The older guys haven’t been there in a few years and we have a few guys that haven’t experienced this at all, so it’s natural,” Kopitar added. “But if you told us that we had to win one game to advance, we’d certainly take the opportunity.”

NOTES

The Oilers are 6-4 all-time in Game 7s, including 3-1 at home. The Kings are 7-4, with a 5-3 mark on the road. … Kane is the seventh Edmonton player to score at least seven times in a series and the first since Esa Tikkanen in 1991.
