style=”COLOR: #660000″MARY EDITH SMITH1920 – 2011 Mary Edith Smith, beloved Mother, Aunt, Grandmother and Great Grandmother (Nana) passed away peacefully on November 8, 2011 in Arroyo Grande. Mary was born in Cardiff, Wales, UK, and at a young age moved to London where she attended the Italia Conte London School of Music and began a career in acting at age 14. She married her childhood sweetheart in London in 1939. Due to the Second World War she moved with her husband to Nottingham where she ran a home decorating business for 10 years known as “Mayfair Wallpapers”. In 1963 she immigrated with her husband to Southern California to start a new life and join extended family already relocated here. Following a successful 20-year career with the “Bullocks” clothing store in Sherman Oaks, Mary retired, and in 1985 she and her husband relocated to the Central Coast. Throughout her life Mary was a vivacious and spirited person, very dedicated and loving to her large family, a true British personality and the “Queen Mum” of our family; the house was always filled with laughter and happiness and the family spent many hours listening to great family stories. Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Thomas Reginald Reardon Smith, and six brothers and sisters. She is survived by one sister, Joan Adams who resides in London, UK; daughters, Ann (Uroff), Lyn (Passarelli) and Gina (Shugrue); a special niece Mary (Marca); seven grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews in California, Canada and England. A memorial service is scheduled at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Los Alamos on Monday, Nov 21 at 10:30 a.m. The family wishes to thank Hospice for their wonderful care in the last few months of Mary’s life, and also the very caring staff at Oak Park Manor in Arroyo Grande where she resided for the last four years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the name of Mary E. Smith to Hospice Partners of the Central Coast.
